Etel Adnan (1925, Beirut) was a writer and artist who began painting in the 1960s. Renowned for her literature, she fluidly combined art and poetry, becoming a prominent voice in Arab-American culture.
His paintings, with compositions of intense color fields, evoke Nicolas de Staël and Paul Klee. In California, he was inspired by Mount Tamalpais, which he repeatedly depicted as an immutable symbol, much like Cézanne with Mont Saint-Victoire. His later work captured landscapes of memory, with geometric shapes and pure colors suggestive of sun, sea, and sand, reflecting his multidimensional and sensorial vision.
He has exhibited at museums such as MoMA in San Francisco, the Zentrum Paul Klee, and the Institut du Monde Arabe, in addition to participating in Documenta 13, the Sharjah Biennial, and the Whitney Biennial.
