Chiharu Shiota, a Japanese artist based in Berlin, has developed a practice shaped by the relationship between body, memory, and object. Best known for her immersive installations made with threads, garments, furniture, keys, and other everyday elements, Shiota creates spaces in which the personal and the collective are brought together through physical and symbolic networks.

Her work addresses questions of presence, absence, life, death, and human connection, without separating them from the objects that accompany everyday experience. After training with Marina Abramović, she developed a distinctive language in which emotional intensity is materialized through enveloping webs and objects charged with memory.

Her international recognition was consolidated in 2015, when she represented Japan at the Venice Biennale with The Key in the Hand, an installation composed of thousands of keys suspended above two wooden boats.
