Jaume Plensa

Jaume Plensa is a Spanish artist, born in Barcelona in 1955, and one of the Spanish contemporary sculptors with the strongest international presence. He studied at Escola Llotja and the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. His practice includes sculpture, drawing, printmaking, artist’s books, stage design for opera and theater, video projections, and sound installations.

His style is marked by the study of the human figure, silence, memory, spirituality, words, and the relationship between the individual and the community. He has worked with materials such as iron, bronze, steel, glass, resin, alabaster, light, water, sound, and video. A central part of his work takes place in public space, where his pieces invite contemplation and a meeting between sculpture, setting, and viewer. His best-known projects include Crown Fountain in Millennium Park, Chicago, Nomade in Antibes, and Behind The Walls at Rockefeller Center.

His works have been shown in important museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. They are also part of collections such as The Clark Collection and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. His awards include Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France in 1993, the National Prize for Visual Arts from the Government of Catalonia in 1997, an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, the National Prize for Visual Arts of Spain in 2012, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center in 2024.
