Juan Genovés (Spain, 1930–2020) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia and, from the outset of his career, linked his painting to the renewal of Spanish art and the artist’s social role. He was a member of groups including Los Siete, Parpalló, and Hondo, and during the 1960s became involved in movements opposing the Franco regime.

His work is characterized by a critical figurative language with strong political and social content. He addressed themes including the individual, the crowd, repression, protest, war, oppression, and the struggle for freedom. His compositions employed elevated viewpoints, clustered figures, expansive backgrounds, and devices drawn from the language of cinema and mass media. One of his best-known works is "El abrazo" (1976), associated with amnesty, democratic reconciliation, and the memory of Spain’s transition to democracy.

His work is held in collections including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the IVAM, the Juan March Foundation, Artium Museoa, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Patio Herreriano, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt. His documented awards and distinctions include an Honorable Mention at the 1966 Venice Biennale, the Gold Medal at the 1967 San Marino International Biennial, the Premio Internazionale Marzotto in 1968, Spain’s National Award for Visual Arts in 1984, the Generalitat Valenciana Award for Visual Arts in 2002, and the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts in 2005.
