Juan Genovés was a Spanish artist, born in Valencia in 1930 and died in Madrid in 2020. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Valencia and, from the start of his career, linked his painting to the renewal of Spanish art and to the social role of the artist. He was part of groups such as Los Siete, Parpalló, and Hondo, and during the 1960s he supported movements against Franco’s regime.

His art is known for a critical figurative style with strong political and social content. He worked with themes such as the individual, the crowd, repression, protest, war, oppression, and the fight for freedom. In his compositions, he used high viewpoints, grouped figures, wide backgrounds, and elements close to cinema and mass media. One of his best-known works is El abrazo from 1976, linked to amnesty, democratic reconciliation, and the memory of Spain’s transition to democracy.

His work is part of collections such as the Museo Reina Sofía, IVAM, Fundación Juan March, Artium Museoa, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Patio Herreriano, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt. His confirmed awards include the Honor Mention at the Venice Biennale in 1966, the Gold Medal at the San Marino International Biennial in 1967, the Internazionale Marzotto Prize in 1968, the National Prize for Visual Arts in 1984, the Generalitat Valenciana Visual Arts Prize in 2002, and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2005.
