Fernando Botero (Colombia, 1932–Monaco, 2023) was one of Latin America’s most prominent and renowned artists. At age 16, he published his first illustrations in the Sunday edition of *El Colombiano*. His artistic output spanned painting, sculpture, and drawing.

His style, known as “Boterism,” is characterized by the depiction of human and animal figures with exaggerated, voluminous proportions. Inspired by masters such as Velázquez, Goya, and Rubens, he reinterpreted works from art history and addressed Latin American culture, daily life, politics, and violence in Colombia from a critical perspective.

He held solo exhibitions, and his work is part of the collections of MoMA in New York, the National Museum of Colombia, the Museum of Antioquia, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the São Paulo Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico. In 2000, the Botero Museum in Bogotá opened its doors, housing more than 200 pieces donated by the artist. Leer menos
