Helen Escobedo

Helen Escobedo (Mexico, 1934–2010) studied at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City and continued her studies at the Royal College of Art in London, later moving to New York. She worked as an artist and curator, focusing on contemporary sculpture, conceptual art, architecture, design, and ephemeral art.

Her work explores the language of sculpture as an expanded concept and centers on the relationship between art and the surrounding urban space. Her practice addresses principles of ecological and feminist art, as well as the study of the human and social effects of placing bodies in space. Through the use of diverse materials, her installations and public sculptures incorporate elements of nature and Mexican culture.

She has presented more than thirty-five solo exhibitions and approximately one hundred group shows, including notable retrospectives held at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City in 2010 and at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey in 2022. She has public works installed in Mexico City, Auckland, Jerusalem, and New Orleans, and her work is part of institutional collections such as those of the University Museum of Science and Art, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, MoMA, the Guggenheim Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and MACBA.
