Joana Vasconcelos

Joana Vasconcelos is a Portuguese artist, born in Paris in 1971. Her practice includes sculpture, installation, and large-scale works, with a language that combines everyday objects, craft techniques, and a critical view of contemporary culture.

Known for her monumental sculptures and immersive installations, Vasconcelos often takes common objects out of their usual context to rethink the relationship between craft, popular culture, and contemporary art. In her works, the private sphere and public space, popular heritage and high culture, come together with humor and irony to address themes such as the role of women, consumer society, and the construction of collective identities.

Her works are part of collections such as Centre Pompidou and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. She has presented exhibitions in institutions such as the Palace of Versailles and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and in 2012 she became the first woman and the youngest artist to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles. She also represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale in 2005. Her awards include the rank of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry in 2009 and the title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 2022.
