Joana Vasconcelos

Born in 1971, Joana Vasconcelos is a Portuguese artist whose career, spanning nearly three decades, encompasses a wide variety of techniques and formats.

Known for her monumental sculptures and immersive installations, her work often begins with everyday objects that she removes from their usual context to re-examine, from a contemporary perspective, the relationship between craftsmanship, popular culture, and contemporary art. In her works, the private sphere and public space, popular heritage and high culture coexist, with frequent use of humor and irony to address issues related to the role of women, consumer society, and the construction of collective identities.
