Joaquín Capa

Joaquín Capa is an artist born in Santander in 1941. He studied philosophy in Madrid and Rome, architecture in Madrid, and sociology of art in Paris. He also researched new printmaking techniques at WS Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris. He received a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation between 1975 and 1976, as well as from the Ministry of Culture between 1983 and 1984. He was a visiting professor at the University of Baroda in 1983, 1989, and 1990, where he also won the Grand Prize at the 1st Bhopal International Biennial in 1989. For this reason, he maintains a close connection with India. He also received First Prize at the Cairo Biennial in 1994. His work has been exhibited in several cities in Spain, as well as in Utrecht and Maastricht in the Netherlands. Capa is a renowned printmaker and painter. He has taught courses at the Barode University of Fine Arts in India, at the Betanzos International Center for Contemporary Printmaking in A Coruña, and in Mexico, Rome, and Slovenia. Among the awards won by the artist are the Grand Prize at the Bhopal Biennial in India in 1989 and the First Prize at the Cairo Biennial in Egypt in 1994. His work can be found in museums and collections around the world, including the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca, the Municipal Museum of Santander, the National Library of Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, the National Museum of Prague, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Los Angeles Country Museum, the LA Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, the National Museum of Egypt, the Siglo XX Collection, the Albert I Royal Library in Brussels, the National Museum of Art in Hanoi, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
