Lucio Muñoz

Lucio Muñoz (Madrid, Spain, 1929–Madrid, Spain, 1998) was one of the main representatives of Spanish Informalism. He trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and, after a stay in Paris in the mid-1950s, turned his work toward abstraction.

His work is known for experimentation with material and, especially, for the use of wood, which he worked through cuts, scratches, burns, and other procedures to transform its surface. He also incorporated materials such as earth, paper, and cardboard, developing an abstract language in which texture, light, and material played a central role. Throughout his career, he also carried out important mural projects, including the one for the Basílica de Aránzazu.

His work is part of collections such as Museo Reina Sofía, Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, and Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. He took part in the 30th Venice Biennale in 1960, and his work was presented in institutions such as MoMA and Guggenheim Museum in New York, Museo Reina Sofía, and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon. His awards include the National Prize for Visual Arts in 1983, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 1993, and the Gold Medal at the Salzburg Biennial of Sacred Art in 1964. Leer menos
