Manuel Mompo

Manuel Hernández Mompó was a Spanish artist (Valencia, Spain, 1927–Madrid, Spain, 1992) and a leading figure in Spanish abstraction in the second half of the 20th century. He trained at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios and the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia, and broadened his artistic experience through stays in Paris, Rome, and the Netherlands.

His work evolved from figuration toward an increasingly abstract language, based on signs, simplified forms, and wide white backgrounds. He worked especially with urban scenes, markets, streets, and popular festivities, gradually transforming them into compositions of great visual lightness. Light, color, and references to the Mediterranean landscape played a central role in his painting, and from the 1970s onward he also experimented with methacrylate and sculpture.

His work is part of collections such as Museo Reina Sofía, IVAM, Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia, Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, and Museo de Arte Abstracto Español de Cuenca. He presented exhibitions in institutions such as Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas and IVAM. In 1968, he received the UNESCO Prize at the Venice Biennale, in 1984 the National Prize for Visual Arts, and, posthumously, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 1992.
