Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-German artist (Münchenbuchsee, Switzerland, 1879–Muralto, Switzerland, 1940), linked to some of the main movements of European modernism. He trained in Munich and took part in the circle of Der Blaue Reiter, alongside artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Between 1921 and 1931, he taught at the Bauhaus, first in Weimar and later in Dessau.

His work brings together drawing, painting, color theory, music, signs, symbols, and a highly personal poetic imagination. Although he was connected to Expressionism, abstraction, Constructivism, and Surrealism, Klee developed his own language, based on lines, geometric forms, visual rhythms, and compositions with a playful appearance. His trip to Tunisia in 1914 was decisive for his relationship with color, while his trip to Egypt in 1928 brought new references to structure, writing, and landscape.

Klee’s work is part of collections such as Zentrum Paul Klee, MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, SFMOMA, Museo Reina Sofía, and Fundación MAPFRE. He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as MoMA, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Fundación Juan March.
