Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican artist (Oaxaca, Mexico, 1899–Mexico City, Mexico, 1991), recognized as a central figure in modern art in Mexico. He studied at the San Carlos National School of Fine Arts and developed a painting style that combined references to Mexican culture with influences from international modern art.

His work is known for its expressive use of color, simplified forms, and a poetic vision of themes such as the human figure, nature, animals, and the cosmos. Although he incorporated elements from pre-Hispanic and Mexican popular traditions, Tamayo distanced himself from the direct political discourse of muralism and built a more symbolic, universal, and experimental language.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo. He presented exhibitions in institutions such as the Venice Biennale, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Museo Reina Sofía. His awards include the Grand Prize for Painting at the São Paulo Biennial in 1953 and Mexico’s National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 1964.
