Sean Scully is an Irish-born artist (Dublin, Ireland, 1945), recognized for his contribution to contemporary abstract painting. Born in Dublin and raised in London, he has developed much of his career between Europe and the United States.

His work is known for the use of stripes, blocks, grids, and geometric structures built with dense, expressive paint. Through the relationship between color, form, rhythm, and material, Scully explores emotion, memory, landscape, and the physical experience of painting, while maintaining a dialogue with European and U.S. abstract traditions.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and the National Gallery of Ireland. He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as MoMA PS1, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Ireland. His awards and recognitions include a Guggenheim Fellowship and two Turner Prize nominations.
