Zao Wou-Ki was a Chinese artist, born in Beijing in 1920 and died in Nyon, Switzerland, in 2013. He studied at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and moved to Paris in 1948, where he developed much of his career. His work holds an important place in the dialogue between Eastern and Western artistic traditions.

His painting is known for bringing together the sensitivity of Chinese calligraphy and modern European abstraction. Through color, gesture, light, and space, he created compositions of great visual power, close to Abstract Expressionism and lyrical abstraction, but always marked by his own identity.

His works are part of collections such as MoMA, Tate, and Centre Pompidou. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris and received major honors, including the Praemium Imperiale for Painting in 1994 and the rank of Commander of the French Legion of Honour.
