MATERIALS AND CARE

 Recommendations for proper conservation of works of art:

  • Keep artwork away from direct sunlight and any other heat sources (heating, air conditioning, etc.). Avoid hanging artwork near areas with smoke and pollution (such as fireplaces or kitchens). We recommend protecting your artwork with a glass frame.

Avoid sudden temperature changes. It is recommended to store paintings in areas with a room temperature of 18-20°C and 50% relative humidity.

If you want to permanently illuminate the work, we recommend using cold light sources. Use a soft duster for periodic cleaning. Never use household cleaners.

Shipping usually takes around 7 days. Shipping costs are determined based on the gallery's location and the size of the artwork. Packaging material costs are included.

Information about the work

Wifredo Lam, born in Cuba into a family of Afro-Cuban and Chinese descent, developed a body of work shaped by the encounter between Caribbean tradition, African-rooted spiritualities, and the languages of the European avant-garde, especially after his years of training and work in Spain and France.

Elle, Casque, part of the lithograph portfolio Pleni Luna, belongs to this visual universe in which figures take on a hybrid condition, between the human, the animal, and the vegetal. In this work, the mask appears as a vehicle for cultural memory, transformation, and the affirmation of identity.

Created during a period in which Lam devoted increasing attention to printmaking, the series brings together images with firm lines, synthetic forms, and vivid colors. These compositions refer both to his cultural heritage and to Afro-Cuban spiritual traditions, such as Santería, as well as to the formal explorations of Cubism and Surrealism.

Pleni Luna also reflects Lam’s close relationship with poetry: each print takes its title from a poem by José Pierre, a writer, critic, and art historian linked to Surrealism. In this way, within the field of printmaking, the series extends the dialogue between image, word, and ritual that runs through much of the artist’s late production.

Wifredo Lam was a Cuban artist born in Sagua la Grande in 1902 and who died in Paris in 1982. He received his artistic training in Havana and Madrid, and later became involved with the European avant-garde in Paris, especially with surrealism. His career combined references from Cuba, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, building his own language within modern art.

His practice encompassed painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. His works combine hybrid figures, Afro-Cuban symbols, spiritual references, and a critical perspective on colonial history. Through this blending of visual languages, Lam challenged traditional forms of Western modernism and opened a dialogue between cultures.

His works are held in collections including MoMA, Tate, the Centre Pompidou, the Museo Reina Sofía, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana. His honors include the Guggenheim International Award, which he received in 1964.
