Fernando Zóbel (Philippines, 1924 – Italy, 1984) earned a degree in Philosophy and Literature from Harvard University, where he also worked at the Houghton Library. His artistic career began with painting genre scenes in Manila, before he moved to Spain in 1955 and became a key figure in Spanish abstraction during the 1950s and 1960s.

He developed an abstract, lyrical, and landscape style based on a rigorous process of formal purification. In Spain, he befriended Informalism artists and participated in avant-garde movements such as ADA in Berlin in 1974. In 1966, together with Gustavo Torner and Gerardo Rueda, he founded the Spanish Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca, which included works by artists such as Saura, Millares, and Sempere, and which he donated to the Fundación Juan March in 1981.

Zóbel exhibited internationally starting in the 1950s. In 1982, he received the National Award for Plastic Arts, and his work is represented in museums in Spain, Europe, Asia, and America.
