Francis Picabia

Francis Picabia (France, 1879–1953) is one of the most important artists of the 20th-century avant-garde. He attended classes at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and developed a versatile artistic practice that spanned painting, poetry, magazine publishing, film, and set design.

After early works influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, he turned to Orphism and other avant-garde movements. He became involved with the Dada movement and helped spread its influence in Spain, France, and the United States. He later explored diverse styles, ranging from the “Monsters” series to abstract painting associated with Art Informel.

Among his most important exhibitions were Section d’Or (1912) and, in 1913, his participation in the Armory Show in New York. His works are part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum. Leer menos
