Hans Hartung (Germany, 1904–France, 1989). He was born into a family of scientists and artists. He studied philosophy, art history, and fine arts in Leipzig and Dresden, developing his artistic career in the field of abstract painting.

His style is characterized by the creation of abstract works using black calligraphic strokes on colored backgrounds. He employed a rapid, energetic brushstroke that he defined as a “spiritual necessity.” In his artistic approach, he distanced himself from the Bauhaus movement to embrace a free form of abstract expression aimed at transcending reality.

Among the honors he received were the Guggenheim Award in 1956 and the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1960. His work is held in major collections and institutions such as the Fondation Hartung-Bergman in Antibes (France), the Musée National d’Art Moderne (Centre Pompidou) in Paris, and international art museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York
