Hans Hartung (Leipzig, 1904 - Antibes, 1989) was a German painter who became a naturalized French citizen, known for his abstract works featuring black calligraphic strokes on vibrant colored backgrounds.

Born into a family of scientists and artists, he studied philosophy, art history, and fine arts in Leipzig and Dresden. From the outset, he distanced himself from the Bauhaus movement, opting for a free abstract expression that transcended reality.

His fast and energetic brushwork, which he defined as a "spiritual necessity," became his hallmark. Hartung received important awards, such as the Guggenheim (1956) and the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale (1960), solidifying his position as a reference in abstract art.
