Hugo Fontela (Spain, 1986) studied at the Avilés School of Arts and Crafts, the Oviedo School of Art, and The Arts Students League of New York, where he lived for a decade before establishing his main studio in Madrid.

His work explores the landscape in its most lyrical form through large-format paintings that at times border on abstraction. Influenced by postwar American artists such as Philip Guston, Milton Resnick, and Cy Twombly, his work draws on the natural environment of northern Spain.

He has exhibited at the Montserrat Abbey Museum (2011) and at the Niemeyer Center in Avilés with the exhibition "Niemeyer by Fontela" (2011), in addition to participating in the 18th Zamora Painting Biennial (2006). He has been awarded the BMW Painting Prize (2005), the Best Artist Award at the ESTAMPA Fair (2007), and the Prince of Girona Prize for the Arts (2014). In 2021, the monograph "The Nature of Painting" was published.
