Joan Miró

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893, but the emotional landscapes that shaped him as a person and as an artist were mainly Mont-roig, Paris, Mallorca, and later New York and Japan. Mont-roig, a small town in the Baix Camp area, was a calm contrast to the lively world of ideas he found in Paris in the 1920s, where he spent time with Surrealist poets, and to the energy of Abstract Expressionism, which he discovered in New York in the 1940s. Later, during the Second World War, Joan Miró left his exile in France and settled in Palma de Mallorca. It became a place of safety and work, where his friend Josep Lluís Sert designed the studio he had always dreamed of.

His strong connection first to the landscape of Mont-roig and later to Mallorca was very important in his work. His bond with the land, and his interest in everyday objects and the natural world, were behind some of his technical and formal studies. Miró moved away from academic art, always looking for a complete and pure kind of work, not linked to any single movement. He was reserved in his forms and in public life, but through visual art Joan Miró showed his rebellious spirit and his deep feeling for the political and social events around him. This mix of forces led him to create a unique and very personal language, which made him one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
