Joan Mitchell (United States, 1925 – France, 1992) studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 1947 and completing her postgraduate studies in 1950. She subsequently moved to New York and divided her time between the city and Paris before settling permanently in France in 1959 and making Vétheuil her home in 1967.

Her work is associated with Abstract Expressionism and is characterized by the free, gestural application of color through bold brushstrokes and dynamic compositions. Her paintings explore the interplay between color and form, addressing themes such as nature, personal memory, landscape, and inner emotional states. Her style combines abstraction with emotional intensity and a powerful lyrical and poetic sensibility.

The Joan Mitchell Foundation was established in 1993 to preserve her legacy, encourage the study of her work, and support other artists. Her paintings are held in the collections of institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Tate Modern in London; the Centre Pompidou in Paris; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice; and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
