Keith Haring

Keith Haring (United States, 1958–1990) was an artist and activist who began his studies at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh and subsequently enrolled at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1978. He launched his career within the context of New York street art, working across murals, advertisements, and public spaces through drawing and graphic art.

His artistic practice is characterized by a distinctive graphic style defined by simple lines, bright colors, the primacy of line, and the directness of its message. He developed an accessible visual language through iconic drawings of figures and symbols. Haring conceived of art as an instrument for social change and organized exhibitions and events in support of various causes.

During the 1980s, he participated in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions. He developed collaborative projects with figures including Madonna, Grace Jones, Bill T. Jones, William Burroughs, Timothy Leary, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono, and Andy Warhol.
