Lucio Fontana (Argentina, 1899–Italy, 1968) trained in Italy. He worked across painting and sculpture, focusing on the exploration of the third dimension and the integration of light and space. In 1947, he founded the Spatialist movement.

His style is characterized by its challenge to traditional artistic conventions through pierced and slashed canvases known as "Concetti Spaziali". His oeuvre is particularly noted for its Spatialist works and use of monochrome canvases, incorporating punctures ("buchi") and slashes ("tagli") to integrate space and light into his compositions.

His work is held in the permanent collections of museums and institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Tate Modern in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, and the Museo del Novecento in Milan.
