Maíllo

Maíllo is a Spanish artist (Madrid, Spain, 1985) focused mainly on painting. A graduate in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, he has developed a practice that combines references from art history, abstraction, popular culture, and other contemporary visual languages.

His work is known for the overlapping of images, techniques, and diverse references, using painting as a space for research and thought. His compositions bring together elements from music, comics, urban culture, and mass media, alongside social, political, and cultural questions. This mixture between high culture and popular culture is one of the constant features of his work.

His work is part of collections such as the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Colegio de España in Paris, and Fundación ICO. He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as Centro de Arte Alcobendas and has taken part in projects at Museo Colecciones ICO and Sala de Arte Joven de la Comunidad de Madrid. His awards include the First Prize at the Frida Kahlo Painting Competition in Rivas-Vaciamadrid, the First Prize at the Painting Competition of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and the A&G Art Prize in 2021.
