Man Ray was a U.S. artist (Philadelphia, United States, 1890–Paris, France, 1976) linked to Dadaism and Surrealism. He developed much of his career between New York and Paris, where he became part of avant-garde circles and worked in photography, painting, drawing, objects, and film.

His practice was marked by experimentation with techniques and materials, and by questioning the boundaries between photography and other artistic disciplines. He is especially known for his rayographs, images made without a camera through the direct exposure of objects on photosensitive paper. He also experimented with solarization, portraiture, film, and the creation of objects, combining photographic processes with Dadaist and Surrealist approaches.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and Tate. He took part in historic MoMA exhibitions such as Cubism and Abstract Art and Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism, both in 1936, and his work has been the subject of numerous later exhibitions. His awards include the Venice Biennale Gold Medal for his photographic work.
