Mary Cassatt was a North American painter and printmaker born in Pennsylvania in 1844 and died in France in 1926. She trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and spent much of her career in Europe, particularly in France. She was one of the few North American artists and women who were part of the Impressionist circle, collaborating closely with Edgar Degas.

Her work focused especially on the everyday lives of women, childhood, motherhood, and intimate spaces. She worked in painting, pastel, drawing, and printmaking, and was renowned for her scenes of mothers and children, as well as her prints inspired by Japanese art. Her perspective offered a modern vision of the female experience and the place of women in social and domestic life.

Her work is part of collections such as the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Musée d’Orsay. In 1904 he received the French Legion of Honor for his contribution to art
