Mary Cassatt was a U.S. artist (Pennsylvania, United States, 1844–Le Mesnil-Théribus, France, 1926). She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and developed much of her career in Europe, especially in France. She was one of the few women and one of the few U.S. artists linked to the Impressionist circle, where she maintained a close relationship with Edgar Degas.

Her work focused especially on the daily life of women, childhood, motherhood, and intimate spaces. She worked in painting, pastel, drawing, and printmaking, and was known for her scenes of mothers and children, as well as for her prints inspired by Japanese art. Her perspective offered a modern view of female experience and of women’s place in social and domestic life.

Her work is part of collections such as the National Gallery of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Musée d’Orsay. In 1904, she received the French Legion of Honour for her contribution to art.
