Max Ernst

Max Ernst was a German artist who became a French citizen (Brühl, Germany, 1891–Paris, France, 1976), linked to Dadaism and Surrealism. His practice included painting, collage, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and writing, and was marked by constant experimentation with images, materials, and automatic procedures.

His work explores chance, the unconscious, the dreamlike, memory, and the transformation of the image. He was especially important for the development of techniques such as frottage, grattage, collage, and decalcomania, which allowed him to create strange, poetic compositions charged with unexpected associations.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tate, Centre Pompidou, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR. He presented exhibitions in institutions such as MoMA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, and Kunsthaus Zürich.
