Pedro Calapez

Pedro Calapez is a Portuguese artist (Lisbon, Portugal, 1953), whose practice develops across painting, drawing, photography, installation, and projects for architectural spaces. He studied at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes and the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes in Lisbon, and began exhibiting regularly in the early 1980s.

His work is known for its research into color, light, space, and visual perception. Through fragmented structures, chromatic surfaces, and open compositions, Calapez explores the relationship between painting, architecture, and image, creating works that modify the experience of space and the boundary between form and background.

His work is part of collections such as Museu de Serralves, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Museo Reina Sofía, CGAC, Fundación Barrié, and Afundación. He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Museu de Serralves, CGAC, CAB in Burgos, Fundação Pilar i Joan Miró, MEIAC, and Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo. He also took part in the 1986 Venice Biennale and in the São Paulo Biennial in 1987 and 1991.
