Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was a U.S. artist (New York, United States, 1923–New York, United States, 1997), recognized as a central figure in Pop Art. He studied at the Art Students League of New York and at Ohio State University, and developed a body of work that transformed images from comics, advertising, and mass visual culture into painting, sculpture, printmaking, and graphic work.

His work is known for its strong outlines, flat colors, Ben-Day dots, mechanical patterns, and compositions inspired by comic strips, everyday objects, and reproduced images. Through these resources, Lichtenstein reflected on the relationship between art, reproduction, consumption, and popular imagery, and also reinterpreted styles and works from art history through his own visual language.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, SFMOMA, Tate, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and The Broad. He presented exhibitions in institutions such as Pasadena Art Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His awards include the National Medal of Arts and the Kyoto Prize, both received in 1995.
