Sandra Gamarra

Sandra Gamarra Heshiki is a Peruvian-Spanish artist (Lima, Peru, 1972), whose practice addresses representation, memory, identity, colonialism, and the ways museums construct their narratives. Her work is mainly developed through painting, installation, and the appropriation of images from art history and institutional collections.

Trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Lima and the University of Barcelona, Gamarra has developed a body of work marked by a critical view of Western systems of representation. In 2024, she represented Spain at the 60th Venice Biennale with the project Pinacoteca Migrante, curated by Agustín Pérez Rubio, where she proposed a rereading of Spanish pictorial heritage from a decolonial perspective.

Her work is part of collections such as MoMA, Tate Modern, Museo Reina Sofía, MACBA, MUSAC, Museo Patio Herreriano, Museo de Arte de Lima, and Museu de Arte do Rio. She has presented projects in institutions such as the Venice Biennale, the São Paulo Biennial, the National Library of Spain, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona. Her awards include Peru’s National Culture Prize in the Visual Arts category.
