Sol LeWitt

Sol LeWitt was an artist from the United States (Connecticut, 1928–New York, 2007), considered a central figure in conceptual art and Minimalism. He studied at Syracuse University and worked at the Museum of Modern Art in New York before developing a practice based on systems, instructions, geometry, and repetition.

His work starts from the idea that the concept can be more important than the material execution. This position is especially clear in his Wall Drawings, works made directly on the wall from precise instructions, often carried out by other people. He also created modular structures, drawings, prints, photographs, artist’s books, and installations.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, Tate, SFMOMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as MoMA, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and the Williams College Museum of Art.
