Soledad Sevilla

Soledad Sevilla is a Spanish artist (Valencia, Spain, 1944), whose career has developed across painting, installation, and spatial research. She studied at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and, between 1969 and 1971, took part in the seminar “Automatic Generation of Plastic Forms” at the Computing Centre of the Complutense University of Madrid, a key stage in the geometric development of her work.

Her practice starts from line, grid, light, and color to explore perception, space, and the passage of time. Between 1980 and 1982, she lived in Boston, where she studied at Harvard University and began the series Las Meninas, reinterpreting the spaces and atmospheres of Velázquez’s painting through grid structures. From the 1980s onward, she incorporated installation into her practice, expanding her research toward more spatial and sensory experiences.

Her work is part of collections such as the Museo Reina Sofía, IVAM, Afundación, and the Banco de España Collection. She has presented exhibitions in institutions such as the Museo Reina Sofía and IVAM. Her awards include the National Prize for Visual Arts in 1993, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2007, and the Velázquez Prize for Visual Arts in 2020.
