Sonia Delaunay, born Sarah Élievna Stern in 1885 in the area that is now Ukraine, was a modern artist mainly linked to France, where she developed much of her career. She died in Paris in 1979. She studied in Russia and Germany before moving to France, and her work included painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, textile design, fashion, bookbinding, interior design, and stage design.

Together with Robert Delaunay, she was a key figure in Orphism and Simultanism, movements focused on color, light, visual rhythm, and geometric shapes. Her work was important because she took abstraction beyond the painting: she used it in fabrics, dresses, books, objects, furniture, and everyday spaces. In this way, she brought art and daily life together, and opened an important path for thinking about the link between the avant-garde, design, and modern life.

Her work is part of collections such as MoMA, Tate, Centre Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. In 1964, she became the first living woman artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre, and in 1975 she was named an officer of the French Legion of Honor.
