Sonia Delaunay was a modern artist (Gradizhsk, present-day Ukraine, 1885–Paris, France, 1979), mainly associated with France, where she developed much of her career. Born Sarah Stern, she studied in Russia and Germany before settling in Paris, and worked in painting, drawing, printmaking, illustration, textile design, fashion, bookbinding, interior decoration, and stage design.

Together with Robert Delaunay, she was a key figure in Orphism and Simultanism, artistic approaches focused on color, light, visual rhythm, and geometric forms. Her work took abstraction beyond the canvas, applying it to fabrics, dresses, books, objects, furniture, and everyday spaces, and opened an important path for thinking about the relationship between the avant-garde, design, and modernity.

Her work is part of collections such as MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. In 1964, she became the first living female artist to receive a retrospective at the Louvre, and in 1975 she was named an officer of the French Legion of Honour.
