Aspirador de José María Sicilia

José María Sicilia (Spain, b. 1954) studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. Working primarily in painting, he produces large-scale works and organizes his practice into series that include still lifes, depictions of tools and household utensils, and urban views of Madrid and Paris.

He considers himself an abstract artist, although the image of the flower is a recurring motif and one of the few figurative traces in his work. His painting is characterized by gestural freedom, forceful color, and dynamic brushwork. His acrylic paintings also reflect the influence of geometric art and Abstract Expressionism.

His work has been exhibited at galleries in Paris, Spain, and New York, as well as in an exhibition held at the Palacio de Velázquez in Madrid. It is also held in collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid; the IVAM in Valencia; the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid; the Musée National d’Art Moderne and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris; and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.
