  • Technique: Etching, hand-signed
  • Size: 75 x 75 cm

Cobert de Roig by Antoni Tàpies is an engraving charged with dynamism and texture that reflects both his abstract language and his ability to experiment with different materials. The work is characterized by the dominant use of the color red, over which black geometric shapes and intense pictorial gestures are arranged. Tàpies employs the grattage (scraping) technique, which adds relief and a tactile quality to the surface. The interaction between textures and colors generates an atmosphere of energy and tension, eliciting an immediate emotional reaction in the viewer. Therefore, Cobert de Roig exemplifies Tàpies' constant interest in matter, symbolism, and the ability of the surface to become a complex and expressive visual language.

Antoni Tàpies (Spain, 1923–2012). Born in Barcelona, he was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Spanish art and one of the principal representatives of European Informalism. In 1948, he co-founded the Dau al Set group alongside artists such as Modest Cuixart, Joan Ponç, and Joan Josep Tharrats, contributing to the revival of the postwar Catalan avant-garde.

His work evolved from approaches close to Surrealism and abstraction toward a unique artistic language centered on experimentation with materials. He used materials such as sand, marble dust, plaster, fabric, and pigments, transforming the pictorial surface into a space for exploration where texture, gesture, and material density took center stage. Through symbols, crosses, letters, numbers, and references to the body and everyday objects, he explored the relationships between matter, space, symbolism, and philosophical reflection.

Throughout her career, she produced a wide-ranging body of work encompassing painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and objects. Her artistic language, which enjoyed great international recognition, cemented her position as one of the key figures in contemporary art of the second half of the 20th century. Her work is included in major collections, including those of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the Tate.
