In Gran Vía, 1 de agosto, Antonio López García transforms one of Madrid's most bustling streets into an awe-inspiring scene of silence and urban contemplation. True to his warm hyperrealism, far removed from photographic coldness, the work portrays the city's architecture under the clear and serene light of the Madrid summer. With a masterful use of light, clearly inspired by Velázquez, López suspends time to capture the deserted atmosphere of a precise moment, turning an everyday and recognizable landscape into a poetic and introspective space. By immortalizing the summer light after a lengthy process of observation, the piece becomes a testament to his creative talent.

Antonio López García (Spain, 1936). Born in Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, he is a painter and sculptor. After exploring different styles during his early years, he turned his work toward realism in the 1950s. Among his recurring themes are the urban landscapes of Madrid, with its streets, squares, and buildings.

His work is characterized by a meticulous and detailed representation of reality, bordering on hyperrealism. His creative process begins with long periods of observation and study of the subject, so he develops each piece slowly and with special attention to precision.

His work is part of the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Musée National d’Art Moderne–Centre Georges Pompidou, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Juan March Foundation, the Sorigué Foundation, the Royal Collections of National Heritage and The Baltimore Museum of Art.
