Robert Longo, a North-American artist renowned for his monumental black and white drawings, developed Monsters in 1999, a series of large-scale charcoal wave images, to which Hell’s Gate belongs. In this carbon print on Somerset paper, the work maintains the visual intensity of the original: an isolated wave, with no human figures or landscape references, is suspended in an instant of maximum tension. The contrast between deep blacks and luminous whites, combined with the density of the texture, evokes the materiality of charcoal drawing and draws the eye to the physical force of the water, the curvature of the wave and its proximity to abstraction.
The work is titled, signed, and dated by hand.
