Pablo Picasso was one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century. He was born in Málaga, Spain, on October 25, 1881. In 1937, Picasso created one of his most famous works, the mural Guernica. This painting was created in response to the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Guernica represents the horror and devastation of war and has become a symbol of pacifism. Throughout his career, Picasso also dedicated himself to sculpture, printmaking, and ceramics. In addition to being a prolific artist, Picasso was also a highly controversial man. He had numerous love affairs and was married twice. His work was also the subject of criticism and controversy, especially during the period in which he created Guernica. Picasso died in France on April 8, 1973, at the age of 91.
