In the graphic work "Puerta de Alcalá, wrapped / project for Madrid," the renowned Bulgarian artist Christo (1935-2020) envisioned a monumental intervention that was never physically realized in the Spanish capital. Known for his large-scale installations in which he covered urban structures and natural landscapes with textiles, the artist depicts in this piece how one of Madrid's most iconic monuments would have been transformed. The composition combines a detailed sketch of the structure draped under its characteristic fabrics with handwritten annotations, diagrams, and drawings from different perspectives. Through these elements, Christo not only highlights the architectural lines of the gate but also meticulously documents the feasibility and technical process that would have made this ambitious conceptual project a reality.

Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, known as Christo, was a Bulgarian artist born in Gabrovo in 1935 and died in New York in 2020. He is known for his large-scale environmental installations and site-specific projects, made in public spaces, landscapes, and landmark buildings. From the late 1950s onward, he worked with Jeanne-Claude, his artistic and life partner, with whom he developed some of the most important projects in contemporary art.

His works temporarily transformed well-known places through fabrics, structures, and paths that changed the way people perceived space. Projects such as "Surrounded Islandsin" Biscayne Bay, Miami; "Wrapped Reichstag" in Berlin; and "The Gates" in New York’s Central Park show his interest in monumental scale, public experience, and the relationship between art, architecture, and landscape.

His works are part of collections such as MoMA, Tate, Centre Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude received awards such as the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture in 1995, the Lifetime Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center in 2004, and the Vilcek Prize in 2006.
