Los retratos viscerales y macabros de Francis Bacon reflejan tanto las profundas ansiedades que marcaron la Europa de posguerra como los tormentos personales del propio artista. Sus pinturas muestran rostros distorsionados en un grito silencioso y figuras crucificadas dentro de espacios opresivos, acentuando una sensación de claustrofobia. Todo ello se intensifica mediante el uso de paletas cromáticas inquietantes que contribuyen al carácter perturbador de sus composiciones. En el caso de Seated Figure, se trata de un grabado basado en un estudio preliminar para un retrato que el artista realizaría en 1981. Como es característico en los retratos de Bacon, el rostro del retratado aparece difuminado entre manchas de color frenético, creando una masa irreconocible que apenas se percibe como humana.

Francis Bacon (Ireland, 1909–Madrid, 1992). He was an Irish-British painter whose work focused on depicting the human condition through figurative art.

His work is characterized by distorted and grotesque figures set in dark, emotionally charged atmospheres. Influenced by Surrealism and Expressionism, he explored isolation, pain, and the fragility of life. Among his works is a series of studies based on Velázquez’s portrait of Pope Innocent X.

His works are part of the collections of the Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane in Ireland.
