Information about the work

Sam Francis (1923–1994), a U.S. artist associated with Abstract Expressionism, developed a body of work marked by the intensity of color, the expansiveness of white, and an open conception of pictorial space. In Untitled (SF-61), (1967), this sensitivity is translated into lithography through a composition that concentrates large gestures of red, blue, and yellow around the edges of the sheet, leaving the center almost clear and crossed by splashes, drips, and small scattered marks. The tension between the central void and the chromatic energy of the perimeter creates an expansive image, in which the gesture seems to enter and leave the visual field without closing the composition.

The work was printed and published by Irwin Hollander at Hollander’s Workshop, New York, as part of Portfolio 9, a portfolio of nine lithographs by different artists published in 1967 in an edition of 100 copies, plus 20 portfolios numbered I to XX. The lithograph is hand-signed and numbered.

Sam Francis was a U.S. artist (California, United States, 1923–California, United States, 1994), associated with Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. He began to paint while recovering from an injury suffered during his service in the United States Army Air Forces, and later studied art at the University of California, Berkeley.

His work is known for its intense use of color, wide areas of white, and strong sensitivity to light and space. Through stains, washes, drips, and open compositions, Francis developed a lyrical and gestural abstraction, influenced by his stays in Paris, Japan, and Mexico, as well as by his interest in European painting, Asian art, and the physical experience of color.

His work is part of collections such as MoMA, SFMOMA, Centre Pompidou, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The Menil Collection, Museo Reina Sofía, and Milwaukee Art Museum.

- Luis Eduardo Ruiz Santiago

I was treated with absolute transparency via WhatsApp; they knew a lot about the art market and framing. The lithograph arrived today with great care, in a cardboard tube wrapped in onionskin paper. It looks just like the photo! But the size wasn't perfect for me; they need to improve that aspect. A very good virtual experience!

- Marta Vilchez

I have found a product/work that satisfies me and the most correct commercial treatment.
