Javier Calleja (Spain, 1971) studied to become a physical education teacher and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Granada; he worked as a teacher before devoting himself entirely to artistic creation. He works in the disciplines of painting, sculpture, and drawing, creating small- and medium-format pieces, minimal works, and art toys.

His work is characterized by the depiction of characters with a naive appearance, disproportionately large heads, and enormous tearful eyes, in which the gradations of the facial features contrast with flat, single-color backgrounds and are accompanied by ironic, critical, or absurd phrases written in English. Through the use of bold colors, scale distortion, humor, and poetry, his work adapts aesthetic conventions from cartoons and children’s illustrations to develop a reflective commentary on contemporary society and culture. His practice reveals influences from Pop Art, Surrealism, Minimalism, and Japanese manga aesthetics, as well as references to René Magritte and Mark Rothko. Furthermore, his pieces are often displayed in a chaotic arrangement or partially concealed in typically underutilized spaces such as baseboards, electrical outlets, or gaps near the ceiling.

His work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the United States. He has received numerous awards and honors, and his works are part of contemporary art collections around the world. Leer menos
