Ángeles San José is a prominent Spanish artist born in Madrid in 1961. Her work focuses primarily on painting, although she has also worked in other media such as sculpture and printmaking. Her style is characterized by a focus on the human figure and an exploration of human emotions and psychology. San José studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid and later at the School of Fine Arts and Design in New York. Since then, she has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. In her work, San José uses a loose and expressive brushwork technique, creating images that appear to be in constant motion. Her human figures are often presented in introspective and melancholic attitudes, suggesting a concern with human emotions and psychology. She has also explored themes such as motherhood and femininity, as well as social and political issues. Among the recognitions she has received throughout her career are the Spanish National Prize for Plastic Arts in 1999 and the GAC (Galerías de Arte Contemporáneo) Award for Best Solo Exhibition in 2013. Her work is featured in numerous public and private collections, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the La Caixa Foundation.
