Anne Buckwalter is a contemporary artist originally from the United States. She was born in a small town in Pennsylvania and currently lives and works in Philadelphia. Her work has been exhibited and acquired in various countries, including the United States, Canada, and Italy. Additionally, she has participated in residency programs in both the United States and Canada. Buckwalter focuses on the exploration of female identity and the coexistence of contradictory elements in her works. Her style is influenced by folk art traditions derived from her roots in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. In her works, she depicts disparate objects in mysterious rooms and ambiguous spaces, creating dark narratives that address questions about the female body, intimacy, and gender roles. The artist uses items of clothing and beds to depict bodies without having to directly show them in her works. In these pieces, we can observe the collision of many conflicting elements. Furthermore, her paintings are composed of a mixture of invented elements and elements drawn from her own life. According to Buckwalter, her work is like "the feeling of being told a half-secret." Her focus on everyday, banal objects, such as a soda can, a laptop, or a favorite sweater, and their juxtaposition with more provocative objects, creates an ambiguous narrative that leaves the viewer with questions and reflections.
