Carmen Calvo (Spain, 1950) studied Advertising at the School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia and Fine Arts in the same city. She works with found objects, altered photographs, ceramics, terracotta, painting, and collage.

Her work develops a visual language close to conceptual art and transforms recovered images and objects into compositions marked by strangeness and critical reflection. She addresses themes such as memory, identity, childhood, violence, oppression, gender inequality, and popular culture.

In 1997, she represented Spain at the Venice Biennale alongside Joan Brossa. Her work has been exhibited at the Reina Sofía Museum, the IVAM, the Sala Alcalá 31, the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, and the Sala Kubo Kutxa, and is part of collections such as those of the Reina Sofía Museum, the IVAM, the MACBA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the “la Caixa” Foundation, the Fonds national d’art contemporain in Paris, the Bank of Spain, and the MACVAC. She received the Alfons Roig Prize in 1989, the National Prize for Visual Arts in 2013, and the Julio González International Prize in 2022, and was named a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia in 2014.
