David Catá

David Catá's work establishes an interplay between personal memory and the creative act. A temporal act recorded through photography, video, painting, and even sculpture. The evocative power of personal objects and the photographs in his family album serve as his inspiration. Through them, he reflects on time, memory, and how to delay the process of forgetting, using ephemeral elements such as ice, thread, dandelions, salt, and so on. Sometimes, his own body becomes the artistic medium for his surroundings and experiences. The stitching and fissures made on his skin are intended as a metaphor for the indissoluble symbiosis between the passage of time and oblivion. His work aspires to preserve time past through the imprint of memory—bodily, photographically, and videographically. It is a work that goes beyond an aesthetic quest. Her performance videos are a cathartic exercise. In them, she confronts the oblivion and sadness left behind by the loss of a loved one, “making flesh” of suffering, physically detaching herself from it once and for all. The ephemeral nature of life, the physical and immaterial imprint, pain… are closely linked to her work. “Every person we meet marks us in some way. Their image is projected onto us, reminding us of where we come from. Their lives become part of ours. Every stitch on my skin represents them; physical pain is no border; it unites us more, to think that my hand has been marked in an act of affection; to think that at one point my hand has touched theirs.”
