Joan Brossa

Joan Brossa (Barcelona, 1919-1998) was a poet, playwright, graphic designer, and visual artist who worked intensively throughout his life, leaving an indelible legacy and mark. His creativity extended to other fields of artistic expression, such as film, music, cabaret, magic, and the circus.

One of the founders of the famous group Dau al Set (1948), he became a pioneer of visual poetry in Catalan literature. For Brossa, expression took priority over content, which he ironically enriched and altered through the creation of double meanings, often based on wordplay. His broad and interdisciplinary vision of culture explains why his works, both literary and visual, are imbued with a defining and distinctive character: the use of humor that is satirical, critical, and intelligent.

Throughout his life, he received awards such as the National Prize for Visual Arts (1992), the National Theatre Prize (1998), and the UNESCO Picasso Medal. He was posthumously awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1999). He was an honorary member of the Catalan Language Writers Association.

His work is part of museums and public collections such as the MACBA Museo d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Barcelona) or MNCARS Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid).
