José María Baez is an artist born in Jerez, Cádiz, in 1949 and resident in Córdoba since 1960. In 1980, he received the New Expressive Forms Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and has been honored with several awards, including the Navarra Painting Prize in 1995 and the Martínez Guerricabeitia Prize in 1994. Baez's work is characterized by his constant exploration of the depth and mystery of color, which places him within the modern pictorial tradition. His work is based on the audacity of accepting the power and simplicity of color fluctuations that affect our perception and evoke natural sensations. His images retain the viewer, generating a connection and a time of reception. His work has been exhibited in important national collections and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Spain and France. In addition, he has created interventions in public spaces, highlighting his ephemeral mural in the Cloister of the Centre del Carme, IVAM in Valencia, and his intervention on the Roman Bridge in Córdoba. “I always tried to ensure that the quotes were evocative, without being descriptive. They weren't overly explicit or conventional, but rather metaphorical and often referenced the very specificity of painting,” explains artist José María Báez.
