The world of Julia Fullerton-Batten (Bremen, Germany, 1970) in the series "Teenage Stories" is that of Alice in Wonderland. The character of Alice takes on different aspects of her characters as if we were at a masked ball. Sometimes Alice sleepwalks, other times she contemplates her reflection like Narcissus, and other times she seems overwhelmed or in a reverie. This psychological approach to girls in the transition to adolescence is strangely disturbing, full of questions and authenticity. The playfulness of her characters is nothing more than an artifice that disguises a decisive moment in their lives: the age of interrupted innocence. This idea of transition is developed in the project "In Between" with an extraordinary visualization of suspended time.
Julia offers us, with generosity and sincerity, an autobiographical work displaying unlimited technical mastery and a carefully calculated staging that doesn't detract from its freshness or spontaneity. In her latest works, she seeks alternative contexts and protagonists, which she explores with equal skill, as in the series "Unadorned," "Feral Children," and "Old Father Thames."
