Rafa Forteza

Rafa Forteza is a Spanish artist (Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 1955), whose practice develops across painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and installation. His work is in dialogue with the gestural and Informalist tradition, with references to Arte Povera, Art Brut, and Abstract Expressionism.

His work explores the relationship between abstraction and figuration through essential forms, signs, faces, crosses, circles, and fragmented structures. Through material, color, and line, Forteza builds an intense and synthetic visual language, where the image appears reduced to its most essential elements.

He has presented exhibitions in institutions such as Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca, the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne, Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma, and CaixaForum Palma. He has also published artist’s books in collaboration with poets and artists such as Joan Brossa, José Carlos Llop, José Ángel Valente, and Antonio Saura.
